Banking App Onboarding Flow
User Problem & Context:
- New banking app users face anxiety and abandon multi-step financial automation setup. Guide users through account creation, bill categorization, and automatic monthly payments while establishing security trust.
Constraints:
Headline: 45 characters
Body: 100 characters
Buttons: 25 characters
Strategy & Rationale
The core strategy builds user confidence across each interaction state. Professional, clear, and reassuring microcopy makes financial automation feel secure and straightforward. The flow introduces key benefits progressively to prevent cognitive overload.
- Screen 1: The Core Value Proposition. The first screen immediately addresses user convenience with the headline
Never fear, Paymate's here!and establishes the primary benefit: automated bills and timely reminders. - Screen 2: Building Security Trust. Before asking for user data, the second screen addresses user security concerns directly. The headline
Fort Knox security. In your pocket.uses a familiar metaphor to convey safety, while body copy reinforces state-of-the-art cybersecurity. - Screen 3: Highlighting Smart Features. This screen introduces automated bill categorization. The headline
Smartphone, smart banking, smart userreinforces user agency and highlights system intelligence. - Screens 4-7: The Setup Process. After establishing trust, the flow transitions to account creation and payment method setup. Concise microcopy (
Enough about us, let's focus on you.) guides the user through manageable forms, culminating in a clear success confirmation (Welcome Aboard!).
Business Impact & Intended Outcome
Progressive disclosure systematically reduces user anxiety, deflecting setup friction and boosting onboarding completion rates. The experience transforms a complex financial registration into a high-trust, friction-free user journey.
App Error with Unknown Cause
User Problem & Context:
- A system outage blocks user access to price comparison data without a specific error code. Inform the user transparently, prevent churn, and provide immediate recovery options.
Constraints:
Headline: 30 characters max
Body: 120 characters max
Buttons: 15 characters max
Strategy & Rationale
This case study illustrates iterative voice calibration and the value of recognizing a first-draft failure. When users can't access the app's core function, humorous copy feels invalidating and dismissive. The design pivots from flippant fiction to direct, transparent, and empathetic recovery.
-
Draft 1 (Scrapped, First-Draft Failure).
Headline:ERROR CODE: 42(14 chars) • Body: "It looks like the elf we have tracking your prices (Alan) stepped out for a quick call or something. Let's give Al a second. If you're in a rush, try our website." (154 chars) • Buttons:RETRY,WEBSITEWhy it failed: flippant humor frustrates users during service outages. The whimsical narrative delays recovery, obscures root cause with an arbitrary error code, and exceeds the 120-character constraint. -
Draft 2 (Shipped, Calibrated Copy).
Headline:Prices are unavailable.(23 chars) • Body: "We can't load prices right now. Please try again soon or visit our website for the latest info and prices." (101 chars) • Buttons:RETRY,WEBSITEWhy it succeeded: complete transparency states the system constraint directly without technical jargon. Clear dual-path recovery (RETRYversusWEBSITE) preserves user agency and protects brand credibility. -
Content Strategy Takeaway.
Strong content design requires knowing when not to use humor. Critical error recovery demands total clarity, empathy, and rapid recovery paths over playful branding.
Business Impact & Intended Outcome
Transparent communication safeguards brand credibility during downtime. Dual-path recovery deflects support tickets and retains user engagement even through unexpected service interruptions.
